Rachel,
"I hope someone out there can help me on this one. " I hope what I have
will be helpful and I will send it under separate cover as it's long. But this
is one I feel strongly about and babies needn't cry so much, basically very
little at all when their needs are met consistently and rapidly. Brown
University Child and Adolescent Newsletter published a Harvard report on life long
effects of prolonged crying which include PTSD, depression, and phobias in adult
life. Crying raises cortisol levels and according to this study this creates
permanent brain changes, leading to a lessened ability to handle stress and
illness.

I worte about this on Lactnet before when the issue of letting babies cry it
out came up. I think infants/children crying and left to cry is similar to
the concept that several ear infections per year is normal; just because it's
happening commonly doesn't mean it is normal for babies. I've seen mainstream
parenting magazines state something like 2-3 hr/day of crying is normal. Boy
would I be a wreck if I spent 1/4 of my day, every day, upset and crying.
