Hi all,

I've been lurking here for ever so long and first just want to thank all of
you for the wealth of information you make available.

I have a question (and will do an archive search as well but need an answer
asap) regarding a mom who was told she must stop breastfeeding as she was
diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Her baby is 6 months old and fully
breastfed. Her test results read: TSH 29.24 and T4 7.32. She was given the
following choice. 1) stop breastfeeding and that will solve the problem (!)
or 2) start taking Eltroxin (thyroxine) which you will then need to take for
the rest of your life as the thyroid will never be able to function properly
on its own again once you start supplementing with hormones.

She does not want to become dependant on medication (I always understood
that the use of thyroxine did not definitely mean you would become dependant
on it for the rest of your life) so has decided to stop breastfeeding. The
doctor also told her that she must do this IMMEDIATELY since she was gravely
endangering her health by putting off a decision any longer!

I know that many women suffer temporary thyroid imbalances following
pregnancy and birth but this is actually the first time that I have come up
against this type of question after being in the "business" for 30 years!

I'm sure there is no reason to stop breastfeeding but I need documentation
for this mom asap. Any assistance is most appreciated. She is under a
great deal of stress and quite concerned about her own health but also quite
depressed at the thought of having to stop BF. Only because her
mother-in-law is my best friend did she agree to hold off on making her
decision to stop BF for a day or so.

Thanks so much,
