Am I the only one who shares Karen's (9/29) concerns about Lactnet? I
read the responses with interest--none in agreement; most saying basically
"love it or leave it." We Lactnetters would be smart to ask ourselves,
"What IS it about Lactnet that the opposition might view as unprofessional
or radical?" Even if we don't care what people who aren't breastfeeding
advocates think of us, we could improve Lactnet for ourselves.

The sheer volume of traffic on Lactnet is one reason why many people are
turned off. I hadn't read my email for 5 days, and I had 58 messages: 22
work-related, 6 digests from NICUNET and 30 digests from LACTNET. It took
me almost 3 hours to clean up.

Traffic on NICUNET is much more manageable, lots of fun and very rich--not
cut-and-dry. (See for yourself by subscribing to NICUNET at

Should we consider creating two bulletin boards? One for emotional
support and sharing, especially for lactation consultants needing help
with business practice issues such as fees for service, etc. The other for
clinical practice issues--which is not to say it will be humorless! The
latter would be the one you would invite "the opposition"--that is,
perinatal and pediatric health care providers who NEED to be breastfeeding
advocates but aren't quite there yet--to join.
