Kathy in Houston writes; >>Plus we give a bottle of glucose water in the

after birth (they are allowed to breastfeed first). I try to advocate
waiting as long as the nurse will let me. Sometimes we have to do some
bottle feeding to satisfy the staff and doctors until baby decides to eat on
his own. <<
Hi Kathy, I am very surprised at this. I don't know if your hospital policy
makers know or care but this is not the "standard of care" practiced in other
hospitals, at least not here in the NE. I can remember a time, years ago,
when some nurseries offered sugar water first in order to rule out anatomical
anomalies but this has long since disappeared. The urgency of the directive
is particularly troublesome. I encourage you to start questioning the
rationales behind this in an effort to bring your hospital into the 21st
century!
