Maybe some of you wise ones could help me with a call one of our nurses
received this morning. Have a mother newly pregnant with her third child.
Her second son was breastfed for one year, but when he was eventually given
cow's milk, had a severe allergic reaction. This included status
asthmaticus, and he now has asthma with rash when he ingests dairy products.
She was told by her doc that he is allergic to "milk protiens." Now she is
just pregnant with her third, and wants to know if there is anything she can
do to prevent her developing fetus from having the same experience. Of
course, as a woman, she is blaming herself for her second son's allergic
response, and wants to know if there was something she did during her last
pregnancy!! (why are we so hard on ourselves?!) My nurse assured her that
this was not the case, and that he probably would have been allergic to much
more if she hadn't breastfed!

Please let me know if you are aware of any similar situations and have any
suggestions for this mom. Thank you in advance!
