My question is how does a drug or drugs a mother takes during pregnancy
affect bilirubin in the newborn? What is the process? Client A had
cystitis during her pregnancy and was given (at alternate times and
sometimes together) macrobid, sulfur drugs, and gentomycin (sp) for almost
the entire nine months of pregnancy. Delivery was induced using the
cervical patch and then pitocin drip. She delivered a 10 lb. 1 oz. baby
girl on Nov. 27. She did have a low dose of demoral during labor. Mother
recieved antiobiotic (not sure what) IV after delivery. She is now taking
amoxicillin, iron, prenatal vitamins, anaprox or darvocet for pain. The
aby was a "little" yellow on Nov. 29 at discharge. Today Dec. 1 baby has
bili of 15. MD put baby on bili blanket with another bili check to be done
tomorrow. What do you think? Thanks, Camille Foretich, BS, IBCLC, CHES
