For me it didnt' seem to be as much of an issue with normal flora as with dry
skin, increasing the possibility of nipple damage. I have very dry skin, I
don't wash with soap every day b/c it's way to drying - for my nipples or
anywhere else.

<<and i would never
think to add to general breastfeeding advice "never wash your nipples.">>

Really? this peice of info is everywhere. Mom's ask all of the time "how
do I need to take care of my nipples? do I need to wash them with anything
special or put any special lotions or creams on them?" The mom's who've read
every book under the sun instead say "I know that I'm not supposed to use
anything other than water on my nipples. Anything else I need to know?
Should I use lansinoh?"

I think that the non-nipple washing advice gets tossed into every book just
in case grandma is standing over her granddaughters shoulder reminding her to
wash her nipples before every nursing, swab with an alcohol swab, etc.
