Dear Lactnetters,
I'd like to tap your wisdom for one of my clients, please. She
delivered on July 17, but was only able to keep the baby on the breast
for a few days because of very, sore cracked, bleeding nipples which
still persists while exclusively using an electric pump. She has a
history of breast implants, and very small areolas with non-elastic
breasts. She is also a lacto-ovo-vegetarian who is currently taking
Ginko Biloba, St. John's Wort, and CoQ10 (?) as well as Vitamin E
(400mg.), Vitamin C (1000 mg.) and Calcium in addition to a vegetarian
multivitamin. At her choice, she is pumping and feeding her milk by
bottle to the baby. However, in just the last 2 - 3 days, she says that
her stomach has been feeling very "sour" and her freshly expressed
breast milk also has a sour smell. When fed to the baby, she squirms in
pain, screams, and then throws up the breast milk. This does not happen
with dairy-based formula. The mother has cut back on her dairy intake
and slightly increased her intake of soy milks to compensate. If this
were a true dairy allergy in the baby, wouldn't we be seeing similar
symptoms after drinking the formula? What could be causing the mother's
stomach to feel so "sour" and also be affecting the baby in just the
last couple of days. She has been taking these herbs and vitamin
supplements for at least the last 5 years. At my earlier suggestions,
she stopped taking Aloe Vera, and something called "Calli tea" 2 weeks
ago. She did have antibiotics in the hospital for her C-Section. Her
doctor has told her that the sour stomach is hormonal and related to
breastfeeding and the pediatrician has said to just not give the baby
her breastmilk for a couple of days. Does anyone have any ideas on what
could be actually going on with this mom? What other suggestions could
I give her? She said that she feels like she's throwing away "gold"
when she dumps her milk, but she also doesn't want to see her baby in
pain and throwing up. Thank you for any help!
