Well, one thing about my making statements on LN is that I'm sure SOMEONE
will ask me to put my "money where my mouth is." Once again, I've been
asked by many people "which countries provide expressed human milk for their
hospitalized children under age 5." I have packed and unpacked and moved
all sorts of files around, so this took some digging, but here is where I
got that:
Arnold, L. (July 10, 1995). #206 Global Issues in Donor Human Milk
Banking." La Leche League International biannual conference Nuturing the
World's Future, July 8-11, 1995, Chicago, IL Hilton. pp. 228-240 in the
CERP syllabus.

According to my notes taken at the session and the bibliography, there are
several countries that do this. The ones I took note of are Sweden and
Denmark. Here is the citation for that:
Tully, M. 1991. "Human Milk Banking in Sweden and Denmark." JHL, 7:
145-146.
<My notes say that expressed milk is obtained both through donation and paid
actively lactating moms. The pediatricians write the orders very frequently
and that the standard is for all hospitalized children 5 and under to
receive at least part of their nutrition this way."

Here are some other relevant citations:
Arnold, L 1994. "The lactariums of France: Part 1 The Lactarium Docteur
Raymound Fourcade in Marmande. JHL, 10:125-126.

Narayanan, I 1982. Human milk in the develpoing world: To bank or not to
bank. Ind. Ped 19: 395-399.

Narayanan, I, Prakash, K and Gujral, VV 1982. "Management of human milk in
a developing country: Experiences and practical guidelines." J. Trop Ped,
28:25-28.

There are many more references.

I hope this helps. I must say that for those of you pondering whether to
attend the LLLI conference this year, I use my CERP notes all the time from
the LLLI (and area) CERP sessions I've attended and previously helped
organize. I'm currently trying to figure out how to go to both ILCA and the
LLLI conf in Chicago. Anyone have any money trees available?
Warmly,
Chris
