Dear Heather, if mom has had an epidural or spinal, as is so common in US,
the period of an hour or so right after birth is the best time to nurse
because she is sort of numb and will be the most comfortable she will be
for the next day or so. But you have to be real careful of good
positioning and alignment. As she is not as readily able to move herself
around. I've seen awful damage when baby is incorrectly latched on and
left to nurse without mom getting assistance with positioning and propping
with pillows etc. Recovery rooms aren't the best place to find pillows,
folded bath sheets work. Mom also has an IV which makes movement awkward.
Recovery room nurses really need to be trained in "First Latch."
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
