I wouldn't even think about it, either in the US or the UK! It would
sound like madness!

The manufacturers have done a very good job over the past 100-plus
years (and thanks, Virginia, for that great post!) in promoting the
idea that *anything* commerce and industry does is better than
mothers can do in their own kitchens (let alone with their own
bodies).

Amazingly, they have managed to emerge with relatively clean hands
from their dalliances with arrowroot biscuits, totally unmodified
formulas and other products; even now, when formulas are still
changing and 'improving', the message is that ' what we are offering
you now is really fantastic and will improve health and it is
important for infant health that this alone is used' and no one says,
'hang on, that's what you said last time you added something.....'

The biggest coup is with healthcare professionals though. HCPs who
would never dream of saying anything critical about the use of infant
formula would faint away in horror* (before calling social services)
if a mother declared her intention of using a home made formula to
feed her infant.

* slight exaggeration only. The social services comment is not.
