I must have missed something. Did someone suggest that IBCLCs do a
frenotomy? That would definitely be in the scope of practice of a surgeon,
not a nurse, or IBCLC. This would be a totally inappropriate intervention
for an IBCLC. Now, diagnosing pain would be in the scope of practice of a
nurse, I believe, at least from what I've learned in nursing school.

And with the situation with Kellie's mother, who saw two or three IBCLCs,
and they have ignored the mom's pain, etc, this is a good reason why ILCA
should not be developing a credential lower than IBCLC, in my opinion.
Kellie, you should not demean your own abilities here, you are not just a
lay counselor, or whatever. You obviously have more patience and knowledge
than the professionals whom this mom has paid to work with her in the past,
and who have left her in a woeful state without proper intervention. This
is why I think and believe that we need a practice component to the IBCLC
level, and why IBCLC is the beginning minimum level for practice, not a
level that one should aspire to. The fact that this mom doesn't want
another paid "professional" does not surprise me. Why should she pay another
one when the ones she's had have let her down?
