(Glad I noticed my typo in the subject line before I sent this. I had
the middle 2 letters exchanged!)

I haven't read the book yet, but have been fascinated by the discussion
and will definitely add it to my list. I think one problem in how we
perceive what we read is how much space is devoted to a subject. No
matter how strongly one states that breastfeeding is the best, that
hands-on confort should be sued first, etec. etc. etc., if more copy
space is then devoted to alternatives, then a person is going to notice
the latter part more than the initial disclaimers, no matter how well
worded they are. If this is true for one reading all the copy, how much
more so for one who is scanning the book and only reading what catches
their attention.

How to solve this? I don't really know. Since breastfeeding is the
norm, it probably doesn't require as much explanation as suggestions to
use when the norm isn't meeting the particular needs of a given
situation. I do, however, feel both authors and those critiquing the
authors' works ned to keep this phenomenon in mind.

Winnie
