HI Lynn,
I have used hydrogel dressing for sore/cracked nipples for the past 4-5 years
without a problem.  I have not observed what you described or any incidence
of mastitis.
I try to reserve the use of these dressing for a cracked nipple and use EBM
and purified lanolin for sore nipples.  I also encourage Moms to discontinue
the dressings when the nipple is healed.
What I do see at times is the over use of dressings and lanolin for normal
latch-on discomfort or with the idea that using these products will prevent
sore nipples.  These practices I try to discourage.
I think what is key for a Mom with cracked nipples is that she be followed
until the problem is resolved.
