Lynn, there are many paths. Are you in contact with
your local La Leche League Group? The lactation
profession has its roots in La Leche League and the
path of the LLL Leader remains an extraordinary
opportunity to learn. The LLL (or volunteer) path
involves mentoring, self-study, and a rich opportunity
to learn from mothers from pregnancy through weaning.
The volunteer/nonprofit nature of the organization
allows accredited Leaders to follow mothers in-depth
and longterm.

Check out the IBLCE website. Search the Lactnet
archives for discussion of pathways, and for links to
discussion groups for "IBCLC2Bs."

I cannot recommend the LLL path highly enough -- to
enhance your experience as a nursing mother, to
explore the experience of lactation and of nursing as
a breastfeeding counselor, and to advocate for
breastfeeding in your community.

No matter which path we're on, or how far along, each
of us has a lot to learn from communities of nursing
mothers. I noticed your spelling of "breast feeding"
rather than "breastfeeding." LLL meetings are a great
place to understand that breastfeeding is one word, a
relationship, just like nursing and mothering and
other dances between mother and child.
