On the thoughts of Floating.... I think this gets easier with more children,
at least it has for me and most of the clients I have seen that have more
than one child. I have found that as long as there is an understanding
husband in the house then a mom can usually catch up on some zzzz's when
he's around. (On that note, when I meet a new client, I like to meet the
entire family, dh included so that I can get a good feel of the family
dynamic.) With the last two births of my own children, I have found myself
saying "oh ____ is so much easier than it was with Harry (my first)" My mom
asked me one day if it was really easier or if I had just become better at
coping and had gained more experience as a mom. I find myself thinking this
new little bundle of mine is so much easier than my boys, but I do think
it's a combination of coping skills and experience.

When a new mom asks me when their baby will sleep all night or when things
will get easier, I just tell them that the lower their expectations are, the
more easily they will be to please! I get more calls from second time moms,
ones that want to know when they will be comfortable going alone in public
with two kids, and "how will I ever get all the grocery shopping done?" My
best advice comes from experience. I tell moms that the sooner they can get
out in the real world and do things with both kids (or all three kids, etc),
the quicker they will get used to it. If they are always waiting for Dad
to come home before they go to do something then they will never learn how
to parent more than one child in public. It takes time, but for most moms,
if they just jump in then they will get the hang of things. Plus how much
easier can life get for the average bfing mom? I teach my clients to nurse
with a baby in the sling, how to use the sling from day one so they aren't
lugging that huge heavy car seat everywhere, how to nurse without a nursing
shirt in public, etc. Where I am from it's hard to teach some moms that
nursing in the grocery store while shopping is ok, especially if it's done
in the sling so no one knows what's happening, but once they are well
practiced at it most use the skills and are very thankful.
