I personally have chosen diflucan (fluconazole) over nizoral (ketoconazole)
because diflucan is used in infants. I had a nice discussion with a peds ID
at the UW wisconsin, and he uses alot of diflucan in his immunologically
deficient patients and feels it is safe, and he sees pediatricians using it
orally for peds oral thrush. Nizoral has never been used nearly as much in
pediatric populations; I agree with the dermatologist that the abnormal
liver tests is not as significant until it is used for 2-4 weeks...I am
really cautious with nizoral, and test people if it is used for over 2
weeks. I have noted less liver problems with diflucan. I still vote for
diflucan...I don't see why he would say you need to use nizoral for less
time...as far as I know, there are no documented time periods listed by
anyone for either drug in regards to 'ductal'yeast. The reason I put it in
parentheses is because many doctors don't believe it exists. I definitely
am a believer!!-Anne Eglash MD
