Greetings,

Yes, you can give breast milk or even just plain old breastfeed a baby
and/or toddler with type-1 diabetes. Breastmilk in carbohydrates is not far
off from cows milk It's listed on page 225 of "Bowes & Church's Food Values
of Portions Commonly Used" by Jean Pennington, as 2.1 carbs per 1oz of milk.
So, it would be about 16g for 8oz (1 cup).

Since she would be giving him expressed milk there is little worry over not
knowing the amount consumed. Also, like any food, she can see a pattern if
any on how it will effect his blood glucose levels. The higher the fat the
more level the rise in his blood glucose level, so as her infant ages and
her milk becomes less fatty the carbs might rise slightly as skim milk has
more carbs per oz than whole fat milk.

As a disclaimer, I'm not a doctor, however I did breastfeed my youngest
through her dxd of type-1 diabetes at 13 months until she weaned just past
her 3rd birthday. I did this with the support of my daughter's Endo team.
Heck, I'm not sure how we would have gotten through all those appointments,
blood checks and shots without the comfort of the breast. It was not
uncommon for me to nurse Fiona while her Endo did his stuff.

Cheers!
