I have a question. If a newborn nurses well for the first, say, 20-25
minutes, really *eats*, then is it a problem if he just likes to "be there" at
the breast for another 20 minutes?? I agree that 45 minutes of suck a little,
hang out a little, suck a little may not remove milk very well and may lead to
decreased supply. I do find, however, that many babies do their eating in the
beginning of a nursing (mom watches for swallowing, feels let-downs, etc) and
then just relax with the nipple in their mouths. Some will let go, others
will not. If baby is positioned well, latched well, and not slipping down on
the nipple, does there have to be a problem with a nice long feed and snuggle,
even *if* this is the baby's pattern?

minutes and gained 13 oz in his first week of life (never lost) and I was
never the least bit sore :-)
