From viewing the many patents on human lactoferrin, I believe that this
particular formula must be spiked with human lactoferrin or bovine
lactoferrin--both are genetically engineered.  The reasoning for adding human
lactoferrin or bovine lactoferrin is because of lactoferrin's iron-binding
properties that help prevent diseases.  The assumption is that what they make
in the lab, by genetically engineering it, is equivalent to the real thing.
I had assumed that this spiking had not yet been approved by the FDA but I
guess from what you are describing it has been approved.  You have some good
questions in regard to this addition--how will this interact with human milk,
etc.  My question is, what will be the long-term effects of genetically
engineered lactoferrin on the pre-term infant?  We won't know til these
