I am reaching out for help.

We are meeting as a task force of Nursing Leaders in our MCH Division,
to address all aspects of the Model Hospital for breastfeeding as per
NYS DOH and come up with an action plan to address the gaps in practice.

Of course our discussions are lively and passionate on both sides of the
fence. Clearly the evidence supports breastfeeding as the biologic norm
for infants. We have had some feedback from former patients that the
education may have been too pushy even after they made their decision.
We talked about writing a consent form for formula feeding basically to
say the staff gave me education regarding feeding choices and I am
choosing to formula feed. This way we would know that once the consent
is signed, the patient has made her decision and staff need not discuss
it further unless the patient wants to.

We want to encourage breastfeeding and promote it as the superior
choice that it is.
We want to give evidence based information to patients so as to utilize
informed consent
We also want to respect a patient's decision once it is made. It is
Mom's choice and mom's baby and therefore mom's decision.

Has anyone else done this?
What have you utilized as a platform for the education piece ? AAP
Breastfeeding and the use of human milk?

Thanks in advance
