Your co-worker is very astute, Winnie. Hirsutism (hairiness)is a marker for
androgen disorders that can certainly affect milk production, including high
testosterone levels, PCOS, and hypothyroidism. There is a visual assessment
model in Lisa Marasco's outstanding presentation on insufficient milk supply
called the Ferriman-Gallwey Assessment Model showing a range of normal to
excessive.

I can't say enough good things about Lisa's presentation on Insufficient
Milk Supply and her research into polycystic ovarian syndrome. If you ever
get a chance to see her, it is well worth your time (not a paid
announcement:-)

There is a good lay book out there called Androgen Disorders in Women--can't
recall the title. It was easy and fast to read & really increased my
understanding of this neglected area of women's health.

Warmly,
