I'm sorry if I'm breaking the 3-message rule - but I HAD to reply...

Karleen (from Australia - it's mañana there, isn't it?) said: "If you have
many caregivers it's like being exposed to many languages at once (imagine
someone speaking to you one day in German, the next day Chinese, the day
after French, then English, Spanish, Bahasa etc etc)- you learn no language
well."

I guess I'm very poor in my language communication skills because I learned
two languages at the same time! Así que tengo que explicarme en español
también, me imagino...

Aprendí a hablar en español a Mami, Abuela, Abuelita y la señora que me
cuidaba, Doña Lola, cuando era bebé - but I spoke in English to my father,
Uncle Randy, and to Mom when we were in the presence of those who did not
speak Spanish.

When I was a 2 1/2 year old I couldn't understand why Aunt Fran, who came to
visit from Chicago, didn't speak the "womens'" words...but I figured it out
by the time I went to a bilingual pre-kindergarten at age 3 1/2! Most of my
friends were bilingual like me - y hablábamos en cualquier lenguaje
dependiendo del tópico o al situación.

Por esta razón pude enseñar el curso para cumplir los requisitos de la
Iniciativa Hospital Amigo del Niño de UNICEF en Puerto Rico en español and
then taught the Baby Friendly Hospital UNICEF course and many other
presentations in various conferences throughout the US in English.

Por esto también puedo participar en enLLLace AND I can participate in
Lactnet, too!

...so forgive me if I take it very personally when I'm told that I have poor
communication skills because I was raised speaking two languages - ¡cuando
casi todos los europeos y personas de muchos países en África y Asia
aprenden de esta manera también!

PLEASE do not make blanket statements! Again, we lose credibility ...
cuando damos opiniones.

Jeanette Fischer Carrión de Panchula - Puertorriquena and American - but
always bilingual!
PS - if you need a translation - feel free to contact me - or the many
others who are bilingual in this group!
