The question: Even if a drug is compatible with breastfeeding what would
the long term use of the drug have on a breastfed child? I have a client
who has been taking something for depression and obsessive compulsive
disorder the entire time she has breastfed her last baby ( now 2 1/2 years)
The drugs she has taken are paxil, luvox, prozac. She is currently taking
clomipramine 25 mg. 1 x a day and celexa 80 mg. 1 x a day. When the
information states that the drug is excreted into human milk even in small
amounts what would be the long term effects 2 + years of daily small doses?
Part of the mother's problem is the OCD. When her medications are changed
she goes through the whole process of obsessing on whether she is hurting
her child. She isn't asking for permission to wean. This mother will
continue to breastfeed she just needs reassuring from experts. Thank you
for your help.
