with all due respect, Lois, I think you defined part
of the problem here, " I have found that my
NICU background and 40 years in OB have helped make me
more credible since we are fighting a battle to be
recognized as a valuable member of the medical team.
The truth is many doctors think we LC's are "nuts".
-snip- sick babies, have an advantage because we are
also RN's,we can't or won't be ignored."

As long as any IBCLC has to fall back on being an RN
to be "credible" to anyone, there is a problem. It
isnt' just that the diverse background of different
IBCLC's give more breadth and depth to the
certification, but rather that the medical community
must learn to respect a lactation consultant in her
own right. To say that a IBCLC/RN is more credible is
akin to saying that a PA/MD is more credible than just
an MD. Maybe they are, individually, but I certainly
would expect those credentials to stand on their own,
regardless of the path the person took to get there.
