This is out on the doula net and I am wondering if anyone here knows the
source. Do epidurals "cause" inverted nipples? My contention is that they
may very well make them more difficult for babies to deal with but...cause
them????

Are we really dealing with increased inversion of nipples or decreased
ability of the baby to deal with such? Who did the assessments of those
nipples? Were all nipples assessed or just the ones with problems? Was
this a retrospective study, in which charts were reviewed? Or was it a
controlled study in which nipples were assessed beforehand.

I am most certain that when babies are drugged...inverted nipples (or
flat...) are a bigger problem for them. My thought is that this is the
origin of this difference. I will try to pull the research as soon as I
have a chance. Do you know where it is published.

jami had spoken to someone who said this was some recent research that had
been made known at the SELCA meeting-" According to studies revealed at the
November 1997 meeting of SELCA- Southeastern Lactation Consultants
Association a regional division of ILCA- International Lactation
Association,
there is an increase of inversion of otherwise non-inverted nipples of
women
possibly due to epidurals causing lack of muscle tone, therefore
interfering
with the ability of mom to easily breastfeed." so as ludicrous as this may
seem- deal with the studies not with out thoughts on whether they seem like
what we would consider to be something we thought would happen- who knows i
have a feeling SELCA did really do some research and did not just make this
up- teresa
