Connie's experience with her boss strike a very familiar note with me!

"My boss was talking to us the other day
regarding the fact a pediatrician came to her saying that he was having
to
deal with mothers breaking down in his office because the LCs (at our
hospital--probably includes me!) weren't allowing the mothers any choice

when it came to breastfeeding."

I could have sworn she was talking about our boss! Any time anyone
complains that the LCs "made" them breastfeed in a way that didn't fit
their idea of how it should work, we are immediately guilty of being too
pushy, not being sensitive to the mom's needs etc. If anyone knows how
to "make" someone breastfeed, I'd sure like to know. I can just see mom
tied to a chair, her arms restrained and the LC shoving mom's breast in
the baby's mouth.....wait a minute-isn't the last part of that scenario
exactly what we complain about regarding how some nurses latch a baby
on? I am always careful to phrase recommendations (to the mom) with "If
at all possible...." "We strongly
recommend................because................." If that is
"forcing", then I'm sorry, but my professional ethics require me to give
parents information so they can make their choices based on facts, not
preconceived notions or misinformation!

" These women are a different breed. They want a pain-free
childbirth, pain medications afterward, to send their babies to be
fed-in
the nursery at night so they can get their rest, give bottles when they
don't feel like breastfeeding, breastfeed only when it's conveinent,
pump
and have a good milk supply so they can go out to the mall weekly to buy

tons of outfits and take pictures of their baby each week, and not have
to
breastfeed in public, also take a weekend trip away from their baby to
spend
time with their husband..................and if they have any problems
with
breastfeeding, they expect the Lactation Consultants to *fix* the
problem in
one visit."

And of course the LCs have to fix it without compromising any of those
aforementioned notions about how breastfeeding will fit her lifestyle!

Big sigh.

Winnie
