Re responses from Margaret & Janet:
The letter writing idea is excellent and always worth a try. I will suggest to
all my moms to write a letter to their hosp &/or Dr. re the qualifs of the
people giving BF advice. One trouble here (Phoenix) is the moms report what the
lactation consultant at their Dr's office said, or the lactation consultant at
WIC, or the lactation consultant at the hosp, told them to do. The hospital
really may have an IBCLC on staff, but usually its someone assigned to the duty
in addition to other duties. But they are surprised to hear that there are NO
LCs, meaning IBCLC, at WIC or in any Dr's office in the area. Usually when mom
is quoting what the 'LC' told her, it ranges from okay to horrendous. (An
example of this is coming soon in a post from Susan Prevatt, Phx. LLL Leader
helping a 7.4lb preemie & mom). We have a long way to go to educate everyone!
