I would need more information before making a judgment. Usually a person has a court appointed attorney because of a criminal matter, and it sounds as if the mother and the husband are defendants. It does seem like the attorney is being unfair and needs to get educated about the issues involved for this family, including the 5-hr-drive. OTOH, it is possible that this attorney is representing the family for little or no money (it's shocking in some states--where an attorney is only paid $2,000 to do a murder trial) and must make arrangements to balance his workload. Either way, the family needs to act respectfully to all involved. This is beyond a breastfeeding issue, and there are no laws in the US to address this matter. As breastfeeding advocates, we have to be careful about whether an issue really involves breastfeeding, or if there is something else going on in the situation. I would give the AAP statement to the parents to give to the attorney.
