21 years ago I exclusively breastfed my second child, around 6 weeks she
began with symptoms of 'colic' (according to her pedi) crying, board like
abdomen, gas, timing not consistent, only real source of comfort was
breastfeeding. He suggested I try to eliminate possible food (mine) causes.
He NEVER suggested I stop breastfeeding! Over the next few weeks I
eliminated, one at a time, a variety of food substances. Nothing seemed to
make a difference until I eliminated peanut butter - a staple of a low
income family of four! - within 24 hours the 'colic' symptoms stopped. One
month later I was on vacation (she was now 3 months old and still
exclusively breastfed), I ate 1/2 of a 'grinder' type sandwich for lunch, by
bedtime she was screaming. I called the sandwich shop in the AM and asked
for a list of their ingredients - yep the oil on the sandwiches contained
peanut oil. I never ate peanuts or byproducts of peanuts while I continued
to breastfeed. I did introduce peanut butter to her after her 2nd birthday
with no effects seen. As a teen she became lactose intolerant - any
connection? who knows?

The theory was that the peanut proteins did not breakdown enough for her
young digestive system. I'm not a nutrionalist but it sounds good to me.
