Thanks Vaishali and Catherine for your responses on hypernatremia in  
infants.  Also I want to apologize to Dr. Nancy Wight for spelling your  name 
incorrectly. (I was tired and not feeling well)
We had a baby at only 2 days of age admitted to the Special Care Nursery  
with a diagnosis of dehydration and hypernatremia.  The neo said it had to  be 
dehydration because the sodium level was high.  I don't recall all the  issues 
in this case but the baby was not a good nurser and there was probably  too 
much mother/baby separation.  But at 2 days what would make a baby's  sodium 
level rise?  They should have enough reserve from birth to hold them  for at least 
2 days if not more.
I understand that a baby with classic signs and symptoms of dehydration  
would have a high sodium level but at such an early age could there be something  
else going on?
