Since I bared my soul before Lactnet early in the week, I think it proper to
give an update on our beautiful baby boy, Nicholas, who as born on Dec. 1, 8
lbs 12 oz , 21 inches long. I had been having contractions since Saturday
but had no dilation--I was having stronger, quite regular contractions right
before my c section. I was very alert and aware of what was going on--my
spinal was light enough to provide a lot of sensation which was not painful
but disconcerting and uncomfortable but ultimately very grounding if that
makes sense at all (I knew I was there, I knew when Nicholas was born
without being told, etc.) and I was surprisingly centered and peaceful
throughout. Kevin took him on a quick nursery run and he appeared--calm,
wide eyed, and alert--minutes after I arrived in recovery. I had no nausea
and no shakes (unlike last time) and I was able to hold and nurse Nicholas
as long as we both wanted in recovery and spent most of the rest of the next
two days either nursing or napping on my chest.

The road hasn't been entirely obstacle free--hospitals are what they are
(terrible beds, bad lighting, bad food, constant intrusion, like I need to
remind you) and I developed a fever which meant I spent an extra day, the
aftermath of which has proven to be the most challenging thing to deal with.
We're home now, however, and although tired and adjusting we're happy and
grateful.
