Many years ago the hospital I worked in stopped recommending tight breast
binding for weaning moms because of an article that suggested that tight
binding caused milk to "leak" into the breast tissue, setting up an
inflammatory response.
We instead began a program of comfortable bra, ice, avoidance of breast
stimulation, along with ibuprofen for discomfort.  This was for mothers who
chose not to breastfeed.
This was more thatn ten years ago and I do not have any idea if that article
can still be found.
