Virginia,

Sadly, this leaflet has been 'updated' with the influence of FSID
(Foundation for Sudden Infant Death), who has had a formula manufacturer as
a FSID sponsor, as well as Tomy, Baby Grow Bag and Babies R Us. Babies R Us
gives 1 BPS to FSID for each high end cot (crib) sold. These 4 companies
were advertised on FSID website (http://sids.org.uk/fsid/corporate.htm) All
of these companies profit more from mothers who do not breastfeed than from
mothers who do. Quite a conflict of interest, I feel. Quite a blow to many
of us b/f supporters here in the UK. The formula manufacturer has been
taken off of their list of sponsors as of this year, but the damage is done,
in my opinion. Let's give parents uninfluenced information and let them be
empowered to make a real informed decision, instead of one based on
fear-tactics.

This used to be a fantastic leaflet until just changed (June 2005). Have a
look for yourself.
I have an electronic copy of the old leaflet, if anyone's interested to have
a look.

Subject: Re: sleep positions

In response to the many posts on sleep positions:
At the ILCA 2003 conference in Sydney, Pam Heselev did a presentation on
babies who need special exercises for muscle tone, etc., some of whom are
babies who have never had tummy time. Early this year she came up here to
do a one-day workshop here in Brisbane for the Southside/Logan Breastfeeding
Coalition.
One of the many strategies she talked about, and which some who've posted
on Lactnet have mentioned, is encouraging parents to carry their babies in
positions where they don't have the back of the head against a surface, and
they can learn to lift and move their heads and use muscles they don't use
when lying on their backs. E.g. facing outwards, or held along the parent's
arm on their tummies. So easy, but parents with no prior experience of
babies, and scared of having babies any way except on their backs, need
showing how to. A nice bit of prevention of flattened heads, along with
supervised tummy play on the floor.
The UK BFI people have printed information on safe co-sleeping, specially
for breastfeeding women who bed-share with a baby. There is an Australian
version in leaflet form, too, called "Is your baby sleeping safely?" I
obtained my copies from the Australian Breastfeeding Association's local
office.
I'm nomail now, and so any responses need to come to me privately.
