Lactnetters,
I had a mom call me last nite. Her baby is 7 weeks old and had refused
the right breast for the last couple of days. This mother has successfully
nursed 4 other kids. She has gone thru thrush, sore nipples, ear infections
etc. etc. with the other 4, but not had this problem with any of them, so
she is stumped. She wondered if there was an ear infection. She made an
appt and went to see the ped. He checked out the baby and found nothing, no
ear problem, no thrush, nothing of note. He sent her to me. The baby eats
well on the left side, no problem. When she offers the right, he fights,
pushes and refuses. He has lots of wet and poopy diapers each 24 hours.
She has not been on any meds or changed her diet in the last few days.
I advised her to continue trying the right after giving him a few
minutes on the left or at least to offer the right when he is at peace with
hunger or in a quiet state. To pump the right to keep up the supply when
her doesn't drink there. And to wait it out.
The only thing I can think of is some wierd 'strike'. What do you guys
think? Any other thoughts?? I read Dr. Newman's new book. He talks of 3
months and 8 months for usual times for these sorts of behavior. But this
baby is only 7 weeks. I would love any input.
Thanks all, Betsy Wells-Gephart RN, IBCLC
