Dear Rachel and Lactnetters - Medela's nipple shields are also sold "over
the counter" in a local chain of Children's stores in Israel. The
instructions say that it is known that shields are used for discomfort - or
sore cracked nipples and it is advisable to use for a short period of time
because they can "influence " the lactation. You might fail in resuming the
breastfeeding because the baby will not recognize the mother's scent. BUT if
you use the Medela the baby stays in contact with his mother's
smell ---------the rest is up to your imagination. There is no further
warning or suggestion to see an expert. The instructions are rather unclear
in that they don't convey the impression that the nipple is to be drawn into
the shield tip.
                                                     Warmly, Toby Gish RN,
IBCLC (Lactosaurus in Haifa, Israel)
