I just want to share with you something I found out today. I work in a
small community hospital in Charlottesville, VA. Lately several moms have been
telling us that they had received free formula from the LAB! on outpatient
visits for bloodwork. One mom today told a coworker the reason she didn't consider
BF was because she figured the free formula from the lab meant the hospital
endorsed this formula so she thought that was the best! So a phone call to the
lab supervisor today revealed that the Mead Johnson rep has been bringing them
stuff for years!! She never thought twice about it being wrong. The bags were
cute and the gifts were nice. Her take on it was that if they didn't want the
formula they could just take it out.
So now he has found a new audience. These women come in early enough and
some unsure of their feeding decision. Here is some formula dumped in their
laps and boom-how "easy" it could be to bottle feed. I was furious. I shared
with the lab super why it was wrong and that by doing this they were just
directly marketing for this formula company. I have sent an email to my supervisors
and fellow LC's in order to provide a united front to the lab and the rep that
this practice has got to stop.
   As I said--a new low.
    Happy World Breasfeeding Week!!!
