I would suggest you avoid starting with any questions that may
inadvertantly "plant ideas". Rather than "What have you heard about
breastfeeding?" or "Have you heard...........about breastfeeding?",
how about showing a picture of a nursing mother and asking something
like "What does this picture mean to you?" or "What do you think of
this picture?"
I think you definitely want to get them to open up about their
feelings, conceptions etc. about breastfeeding and then take the
discussion from there. Your aim at this point (unless they are
pregnant teens) is to get them to think positively about
breastfeeding rather than to get into how to latch or any specifics
like that. As to videos, I know there are some aimed at teens and
hopefully others that have seen them can offer some
recommendations. I have seen "Basketball and Breastfeeding" and
while it is aimed at guys, it might be a good one. There were a
series of public service spots a few years back aimed especially at
teens and one in particular showed two moms side by side. One was
nursing and one was just cuddling baby. The gist was "which one is
nursing" and when the answer was shown the comment went something
like, "The only person who should be embarrased is the one who
picked the wrong mom." Embarrasment is a big concern with teens as
well as their own body image, so these need to be addressed at some
point. You might have a mom with a young nursing baby (nursing
alone may be strange, so I wouldn't get into nursing an older baby
at this point with them) there to be a visual image and to answer
questions.
Good luck with this presentation. I really think we need to start
with young folks to really get public attitudes turned around in the
long run. They are future parents, future peers of parents and even
future grandparents, so the impact is truely long range.

Winnie
