Meg writes of the problem with lost pumps. One thing to consider might
be the pedal operated ones. They use the same kit as rental pumps so
that part of the cost is the same. The pedal itself is jsut a little
over$25 (US). I know some places have a $25 deposit (less than for the
rental pump, so often more affordable). That way they are only out the
few pennies difference if the pump isn't returned.
Does the government there really cover the FULL cost of formula for as
long as it is being used? One problem here in the US is that people
assume the formula from WIC will cover all the baby's needs, but it is
only a supplemental support. Unfortunately, the way it works, there is
enough free formula until the baby reaches about 12# at which time the
baby's needs begin to surpass the amount of formula provided. By that
time changing to breastfeeding is definitely a less viable option.
