So after much debate and talk with many people I had decided to sit for IBCLC
cert. in 2007. Then I had lunch with a friend last week who also happens to be
a lawyer. We were talking of lots of different items and up came the whole
dont contradict docs, etc. She told me that if I got that and went against
what the "ethics" said I was open to all sorts of legal issues however on the
flip side since we have the education about what really to do and have given
that advice somewhere in the past if we dont give the advice then we open
ourselves up as well to litigation about that....can we say rock and a hard
place? So dont tell because the doc said otherwise and get sued because the
baby gets worse, or tell and risk it for going againt your standards...what fun.
So for me in private practice, going to as many conference as I can afford
(many clients cannot pay me and well they need help as I am the only private
LC in practice) I would have to test every 5 years to prove what? I know
many IBCLC's that are book savy and take the test for only the title and I am
happy knowing what I know and giving moms the best things I can. My mentor
is not an IBCLC, just CLC and is wonderful. Until we make a better standard
even if only state wide I think I will put my money into education and giving
my moms what they need...I know many will disagree but between the cerps,
testing, and liability I dont know if 2007 will come with testing or not...
