<This is the first time I've done this.

Good for you, Rob! After the first time, it'll get easier.

<Some questions. If mom feeds the baby 8 or more times a day with the SNS
<does she need to pump?

This would depend on how well the baby is latching and emptying the breast.
Personally, I think some pumping would be a good addition to the plan. It
gives a known stimulus to the breasts, and produces visible milk to boost the
mother's resolve. Plus she can put pumped milk into the SNS.

<How to wean off the SNS? When she can pump visable milk or we can tell the
<baby is swollowing milk without the SNS?

I'd go by how much the baby takes from the SNS. Have the mom keep track of
the baby's daily SNS intake. This may drop by itself as the baby gets more
milk from the breast. The mom might try part of some nursings with the tube
pinched off, or with narrower tubing, or with the SNS hung lower to slow the
flow.

But actually I wouldn't be in a big hurry to wean off the SNS. This baby
needs to get settled and gaining on a food that doesn't hurt his gut. He
might even have some trouble handling the lactose in his mom's milk. So the
SNS isn't the enemy here.
