Jumping in here to agree with Magda about holding off on slogans, and this
one in particular, having suffered through mothers being bullied to introduce
solids before this dangerously brief window snaps shut permanently, after
which time the child will never, ever be able to ingest anything requiring
chewing. Especially ludicrous when the 'solids' in question could have been
imbibed through a straw - near-liquid mush.
Magda, am I recalling correctly that the study which identified such a window,
was done on children with Down's syndrome?
Concerning atopy and breastfeeding, the only thing we can safely say is that
the jury is not out yet, because they haven't even heard the evidence nor
determined what all the pertinent evidence is. It may be that long term
exclusive breastfeeding is a result of the atopy-prone child's hesitancy to try
solids. It is unlikely that breastmilk at some point in lactation changes from
being an entirely appropriate food to being a risky one. Recent research
showing the role of gut flora in the prevalence of food allergies, and the effect
on gut flora of practices connected with birth, tells me that this is more than
a breastfeeding issue.
