Recently, at the LLL MA/RI/VT annual conference, Barbara Heiser, RN, BSN,
IBCLC gave a talk on 'The Reluctant Nurser'. One situation she talked
about was a client she encountered with Raynaud's syndrome. I believe the
solution she mentioned included having the mother stop breastfeeding for
24 hours and pump for about 2-5 minutes frequently throughout the day (at
least every two hours) so that her breast muscle tissue got used to the
activity. The part I can't remember too well (and I just checked my
notes!) is whether she fed the baby with the expressed milk via bottle or
cup, or supplemented for those 24 hours with ABM, or both. In any case,
after the 24 hours of short-length pumping sessions, the mother's
breasts were acclimated to the activity, and everything was fine for
nursing.

I don't know if Ms. Heiser is a subscriber to lactnet, but I do have her
email address here in my office. Her company is The Lactation Center and
Breastfeeding Education Association in Ellicott City, Maryland. I will
email her to see if it's OK that I forward her email address to Cynthia.
