i have posted here a few times, but i mostly read and learn,(here is a
little intro)
I am a huge breastfeeding advocate, and am a lay lactation consultant, i
have 6 years experience.I have been here on lactnet for about 2 years.you
are all so awesome!
I am now faced with a personal challenge, concerning an older pediatrician,
and the length of time that my baby can be nursed with out consuming solids.
my son is 8 months old(my third child) he is 22pounds and 29 inches long(my
husband is a man well over 6 feet tall, as is all his family)
my son is healthy and active.
my son does not like food in his mouth, and will gag and not swallow- he
still has a very obvious tongue thrust.
he nurses many times a day, and through the night. he is NOT malnourished.
on agreeing to blood work, i have found that his iron and sugar are both at
the low end of 'normal parameters"I told the Ped. that he had not nursed in
3 hours prior to the blood work, i was told that 'that has no bearing'~
i was told that i had to give an iron suppliment,1 mg once a day for 3
months then come back in to be retested.
Now for my question.
Does anyone here have information that i can share that will say that
breastmilk is more then adequate for the first year of life?
my research shows that an iron suppliment of that small amount will not
show a large increase in his iron in the 3 months.does anyone have any
information on that as well?(i am fearful of ramifications should my son not
show increased amounts that will satisfy the Ped in the time span.)
 Diane
