Dear Lactnetters,

The Ross video is very good for staff (not parents). We plan to use it
for a staff inservice - but not the handouts. Schanler uses a
conservative approach to fortifying breastmilk (you've heard him at ILCA
in Atlanta). That is, they are used for babies under 1500 grams and only
until discharge. You will find that most nicu's, even on non-fluid
restricted infants, will fortify bigger babies (here on paper it is 2000
grams, but in practice it is under about 2300 grams and babies under
2000 at birth would cont to be fortified at least 2 times a day - the
rest breastfeeding.

For parents an excellent, but expensive set of videos is: A Premie
needs his mother parts I and II by Dr Jane Morton,md. (new Hampshire). I
believe she is a member of the academy of b/f medicine.

warmly,
chris auer,rn,ibclc
