What is anyone on this list doing about breastmilk for preterm babies
related to CMV? I guess I had better explain the background behind this
question. I work in a large level 3 NICU in the Washington DC area. We
recently had a long term baby (24-25 wks gestation) who had been CMV
negative convert to positive. I am not sure what mom's status was prior
to birth. Some of the docs are concerned about using fresh breastmilk
in any preterm now. In the new Lawrence book she expresses concern
about using fresh milk (CMV positive) to seronegative preterms. This
raises all sorts of questions in my mind...are all mothers and babies
routinely tested and if so, how frequently? Is the risk of CMV more
serious than the benefits of fresh milk to preterm babies? How often
does this happen? If freezing destroys the virus does anyone out there
do this and do you follow the temperature and time quidelines in
Lawrence's book (-20 degrees C for 3 days)? I am going to be nomail for
a couple of days while I attend the L.A.T.C.H. conference in Chesapeake,
VA so please respond privately as well as to the list.
