Dear Lactnet Friends:

Thank you Eleanor Molloy, for a fascinating case.

Here's some wild speculation.

From my perspective, I see a baby with lots of oral trauma during the time
when the brain was only about 65% its full size. That kind of trauma gets
built into the system as it grows.

This baby can't tolerate a "bottle, dummy, sns or other oral methods that
aren't breast." So, give only the breast. Maybe experiment to see if hand
expression into baby's mouth or breast compression or dribbling donor milk
over the breast, like a pipette (that article I just found). . . .

Stop the Neocate.

Keep baby s2s 24/7 for a few days. This will keep baby calm and in grow
mode. This will help mom to relax and to build connection with precious
baby.

Teach mom to massage baby: Tiffany Field PhD found years ago that massaged
babies gained more weight. (For lots of reasons: higher oxytocin makes
longer villi increases nutrient absorption; less energy expenditure when
calm; s2s boosts blood sugar.)

Mom to hand express or pump, when she thinks of it. . . on her schedule.

Ad lib, unlimited access to breast, including at night; safely: firm
mattress, exclusive bf, nobody drunk or stoned, only the parents.

Re-evaluate in 2 days.

Just my 2 drops. . .
