Hi All,
Well, the mom of the 24wk old who just passed away is in shock. I don't
blame her. She is trying to cope with the loss of one baby while trying to
take care of the other. She wanted to know why the hosp would feed the
surviving twin (Allyson) formula instead of EBM. The hosp told her that her
milk was too strong for the baby to handle right now. ?????? I told her,
that, based on my info, that if the EBM was too strong (baby is now 25 wks)
then the hosp should be diluting the EBM, not giving formula. Dairy
allergies (strong ones) also run in both sides of babys family.
My question for you out there is: Are there any references that I can send
with mom to the hosp to show them that ABM/AIM is NOT appropriate for this
baby, and that EBM is?
My advice to mom was to tell the babys Dr about the family history and to
insist that her baby be given EBM and that under no circumstances should the
baby have ABM unless there was no EBM. I explained the risks of NEC (they
had been given very basic info...it happens..don't worry about it. Great
info, huh?) and ABM and how EBM will help protect baby from that and other
problems. Grandma is totally pro-BF and is angry that the baby is not
getting EBM and is being forced to have ABM.
Any references will be very helpful!
TIA!
Jay

PS Thanks to everyone who has written to me privately. Your words of
wisdom and understanding have really helped a lot. Hugs!
