Sorry about the abrupt ending of my previous message on pumps but I'm on
Freenet and my time was up so I got cut off. I wanted to say that I have
now rented a total of 650 electric breastpumps and many mothers get more
milk on lower pressures. I had one client who could pump 30 oz. per day
at minimum pressure but only 20 if she used medium on the Lactina. I have
had 2 or 3 other mothers with similar results during early pumping but
this particular mother pumped for 3 months with the same results
throughout. She kept very careful records because she did not continue to
feed at breast after first month because of continuing overall breast
sensitivity. I've just had a second client with similar complaints who
returned her pump after 7 months of pumping. She tried many times to get
her baby back on breast. The baby was always willing but not the mother.
She also pumped mostly on minimum.

I also recently had a client relactating with a 10 week old who had only
been nursed her first 8 days. The first week, going from minimum to
medium, the mother found the pump quite uncomfortable. I suggested she
remove the blue ring and then pump on minimum. She found that much better
and after 2 days was able to put the blue ring back and then move up to
medium pressure. By 2 weeks later she was getting 2 - 3 oz. per double
pump. This was also affected by the baby's stimulation with a Lact-Aid
and a 10 day course of Domperidone (similar to Metoclopramide). The
pressure comfortable for a mother is definitely a function of milk flow.
I tell most of my primip. clients that they will probably not be able to
use max. pressure in the 1st 3 months unless they have had a multiple
birth. One of my triplet primip. Moms was using max. by 4 days and was
producing 1000ml/day by then! I tell my clients to use the highest
pressure comfortable for them, but I have such good success rates with
mothers using Lactinas WITH PROPER GUIDANCE, that I would never go back to
renting Classics.
