Are we all really worried about the mothers feeling guilty or protecting all
the health care individuals who for all these years have been saying that
formula is OK?
We are assuming that a mother given the information on risks of formula
feeding will feel guilty for giving their baby this substitute. The real problem
lies in health care providers afraid that parents will come back and blame them
for their children's problems.
How does health care providers handle children injured from a bike accident
without use of a helmet? Does the parent feel guilty that they did not enforce
the wearing of a helmet? There are so many examples, but the bottom line, in
almost all other aspects of health care, providers have no problem describing
risk and benefits of other life decisions. Why would discussing the risks of
formula feeding be any different?
It's all in presentation. Be professional in the presentation, just as in
any other teaching.
Dealing with guilt comes from becoming parents. We just need to help parents
make their decisions in life the most informed as possible.
